BSAU 145e Compliance
BSAU 145e is the British Standard that specifies the legal durability and visibility levels for number plates. Compliant True 3D Plates must withstand weathering and road conditions without losing integrity or performance. Ensuring compliance is essential for the authorities to safely identify moving vehicles. To obtain certification for our 3D Plates, Tennants sent samples to a UKAS-Accredited Laboratory for scientific testing & accreditation.
Here is a brief overview of some of the BSAU 145e tests:
Reflectivity & Visibility
3D Plate digits must not be notably reflective. Registration characters must provide enough contrast to the retroreflective background so they are visible to people & ANPR cameras.
Colourimetry & Photometrics
The British Standard specifies a number plate background & character colours. Certification tests check their chromaticity and luminance factors both before and after 2275 hours of weathering.
Bending Resistance
A 3D Plate construction and digits must be resistant to bending. During testing, samples have a 3kg weight attached to one end. To be resistant, they must regain their original shape.
Thermal Resistance
Number plates undergo testing to evaluate their heat resistance. After five cycles of heat exposure, the plates undergo a visual inspection for any signs of damage or loss of performance.
Solvent Resistance
True 3D Plates must retain their integrity even after exposure to various solvents. Testing includes wiping white spirit and paraffin across samples and later checking for deterioration.
Weathering Resistance
Number plates undergo simulated weathering tests in a laboratory to assess durability. After 2275 hours of exposure to UV light and water spray, the samples are examined for signs of visual damage.
