Here’s another quick legislation article, this time looking at the standard registration format and it’s spacing.

Format Size

Did you know that there isn’t a specific legal size for number plates in the UK. Instead, regulations dictate the inclusion of certain elements and that define their dimensions and spacing. These elements, such as the registration and supplier identifier, alongside the BS Number, determine the legal size of the number plate.

For instance, a standard 7-digit number plate must have a minimum height of 101mm with appropriate spacing, and a width of 460mm, including the centre gap and outer margins. However, if you wish to add embellishments like a side badge or a border, you’ll need to allocate additional space. Hence, manufacturers have adopted a size that can accommodate all these elements, leading to the industry standard of 520x111mm.
